Free phone help
Whenever you have a question about computers -- or life --
get free help by phoning me at my New Hampshire home
603 666-6644. Phone day or night, 24 hours: I'm usually in
and sleep only just lightly. I'll help you get computer discounts,
use software, fix your computer, write programs, develop your career,
manage personal relationships, do homework, edit your writing,
and master hundreds of other topics covered in the books.

    I have just 3 restrictions:
I can't read the books on the phone but I can tell you which pages to read
I can't help you do bad things such as use pirated software
I'm limited to an average of 7 minutes per call but you can call often

Drop in
Drop in anytime, 24 hours. We're in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Come use our free library, which contains the world's best
books & magazines about computer secrets & tricky living.

Phone us first at 603 666-6644, and use these directions:
Take Interstate 93 to New Hampshire's exit 8.
At the exit ramp's end, turn left onto Wellington Road.
Exactly 1 mile ahead, turn right at the Governor's Hill sign
onto Tiffany Lane. We're the second building on the right, #196

Tutoring & group classes
As you know, I give free help by phone calls that are limited
to an average of 7 minutes per call. Most questions can be
answered using that free service; call as often as you wish.

If you want to chat at greater length, for much more than 7
minutes at a time, the rate is $25 per hour. That's for lengthy
help by phone -- or in person at my New Hampshire studio.
You can pick any topic you wish; the most popular are
"computers", "high school math", "calculus", "editing English",
and "SAT prep", but many other topics are available. Your
friends can join you at no extra charge, so the total cost
for the whole group is just $25 per hour. Add a transportation fee if you
want me to travel far. We teach Chinese, too! Phone me at 603 666-6644
to discuss details.

In many cities around the U.S., I used to give "computer blitz
courses" priced at just $2.50 per hour per person. I hope to give those
courses again; but my tight schedule and America's overburdened
transportation system make them harder to arrange now. I'll keep
trying.

Secret CD
You can get our secret CD-ROM disk. It contains The Secret
Guide to Computers 30th edition and Tricky Living second edition,
in Microsoft Word and PDF files. It helps 3 special groups of people:
. the blind who can't read our printed books but have a talking computer
. overloaded travelers who can't lug our huge books
. communicators who want to copy our work to their own papers & Web sites

If you order that CD, we recommend you order the books on paper also,
since the paper version is generally easier to use than the CD.

Free reprints
Since we don't care about profit, you can copy our books, free!

Copy whichever pages you wish, to train or amuse your
friends! Make as many copies as you like. Give them away or
sell them or copy to your Web site, and don't pay us a cent!

Just phone us first to confirm that none of the coauthors have
raised objections, begin your reprint with an acknowledgment
paragraph which I'll give you, and give us access to a copy of
your reprint.

Did you buy the 29h edition?
If you bought the Secret Guide's 29th edition and got a
quantity discount on it, we can give you a similar percentage
discount on the 30th edition 20%, 40%, or 60%, even if you
order just 1 copy of the 30th: On the order form, just write
"give old discount" and your phone number.

The discount applies to the 30th edition, not Tricky Living.
The price of Tricky Living is unaffected by your past.
If you're not sure about your discount, phone 603 666-6644
to confirm.

Personal comments

Writing books -- which I've done for the last 35 years
now seems terribly old fashioned. When people want to learn
about computers or other topics now, they search for free info
on the Internet or just ask friends for help. So why buy a book?

The answer is: The Secret Guide to Computers and Tricky Living
let you learn 5 times as fast as if you search for info elsewhere.
Our books are carefully edited to teach you fast. They're
organized to present you info in the best way, which you can't
get by staring at a friend's face or computer screen, even if the
screen is huge.

If you're trying to learn Windows Vista & Office 2007 and
think you can just rely on your knowledge of earlier software,
you'll be surprised! For example:
Windows Vista has no button labeled "Start." Windows Vista's Start menu
shows no button labeled "Shut Down." and the unlabeled button that seems
to be a Shut Down button is actually just hibernate button. Instead, the
"Shut Down" choice is hidden under an unlabeled right arrow. If you try to
defrag your hard drive, the computer will just sit there, with an unchanged
screen and no progress indicator. Also, Windows Vista clutters your screen
with annoying buttons called "gadgets"' the way to hide them isn't obvious.

The first time you use Office 2007, you see no button labeled "Open" or
"Print". Instead, those functions are hidden in a menu that emanates from
the Office button, which is unlabeled and looks like just a decoration.
Office 2007 has no menu bar and no toolbars; instead, it has a tabbed ribbon.

The 30th Secret Guide to Computers will help you leap past those
disorienting speed bumps planted by Microsoft's goons.

To please your pocketbook, we've given each book a low list
price and offer you a discounted price that's even less.

I apologize for the unAmerican marketing. For the 30th
Secret Guide to Computers, we simply charge $20 and offer free
shipping and quantity discounts up to 60%. the American way
would be have the cover say "$40" instead but send a letter
saying you get a "special price" of just $19.95 plus $5.95 shipping --
or, better yet, make "just 4 easy payments of $9.95 each plus shipping" --
and get just a 10% discount if you order 5 of them.
I've resisted such craponomics; I hope you will too!

Other authors publish crap and then hide from their readers.
Instead, I give you free help by phone at 603 666-6644 even if you
don't buy any book though to get my best help you should read the
current edition, since I can't read it over the phone.

Some readers make the mistake of buying just The Secret Guide to
Computers or just Tricky Living. You should buy both, to develop both
sides of your brain. The Secret Guide to Computers develops the side
that's uptight; Tricky Living develops the side that's relaxed and
feels "all right"!

I'm grateful to the thousands of readers who gave me advice about
how to improve The Secret Guide to Computers and Tricky Living. I've
tried following that advice. I'll make further improvements in future
editions, if you continue to support my efforts by introducing these
books to your friends.

Many readers offer us donations; but we return them, to make sure
we stay honest. If you want to support our efforts, just tell your
friends. Thanks!

Address
Print the name and address where you want the goods sent.
Optional: your phone numbers will help if we have questions;
your email address will get you our news.
If you want the shipment split to several addresses, list them; you still get the quantity discounts.

Shipping typically free
We offer 3 shipping methods:
. Standard shipping is available just to the U.S. It's free. It usually takes 1 week to ZIP codes
under 30000, 1 1/2 weeks to other ZIP codes.

. Air usually takes 1/2 week to the U.S. costing you $3 per book,
1 1/2 weeks to other countries $7 per book.
Multiply that "shipping cost per book" by the number of books.
Do not include the number of Secret Brochures or CD's: we ship those free.

. UPS is a pleasant compromise between "Standard shipping" and "air".
It's available just if you order at least 2 books, stay in the U.S.'s original 48 states or DC
not AK, HI, PR, APO, FPO and give a single street address not a PO Box, not several addresses.
It usually takes 1/2 week to ZIP codes under 30000, 1 week elsewhere. It costs you just $5 total,
even if your order is huge.

Circle the shipping method you want.
