If done with the condition that once Bongo returns, that temp player has first crack at any new characters that arise, most good players will be happy to oblige.  It gets them into the game and gives them a feel for the workings and it gives them more time to really develop a character of their own for later.
Heck, Arden's lady friend here could even become a PC given the right circumstances, so we have opportunities wandering around.

I've been (slowly) going through the archives to sum up experience points,
and that's my observation as well.

Due to popular demand, I will play Bongo myself for the next bit anyways.

We did have some lurkers at one point. I have had a number of requests over
the last few weeks. It seems there is a famine of Rifts games out there. 
Still, it's a big thing to ask a new player to take over an old character,
but we'll see.
