The reactor has a pause function. As he presses it, a computerized
voice announces "This process can be paused for three minutes before
reactor startup processes will have to restart completely."

At the same time Oz gets the message from the leyline ship "We've
stripped down the troop carrier. When can you be ready for us to start
loading supplies?"

And that's when Oz hears an odd whirring sound just behind him.
