With the aid of the dagger, Alex regains contact with
the orb. It is<br clear="none">
still apparently in an "awaiting instruction" mode,
but it still seems<br clear="none">
tor resist being taken control of. The dagger and Alex
together<br clear="none">
literally pick through this strange psychic artificial
intelligence's<br clear="none">
defenses, though it does fight back. At one point,
Alex's companions<br clear="none">
see Alex almost fall over, and a strange babble of
syllables coming<br clear="none">
out of her mouth.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Even as she is doing that, quite suddenly motion
catches Vesper and<br clear="none">
Veronique's eyes. Several energy weapons of some kind
drop out of<br clear="none">
concealed gun mounts in the hold, and then open fire
on the two<br clear="none">
warriors. Both try to jump for cover, but several
blasts blow one of<br clear="none">
the warrior into pieces, while the other is struck
several times in<br clear="none">
the arm before he is able to dive for cover. They can
see one arm is<br clear="none">
hanging by little more than sinews.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Then suddenly Alex opens her eyes, as a strange
mechanical voice comes<br clear="none">
either from the orb... or from her, it's hard to tell.<br
clear="none">
<br clear="none">
"The Crucible recognizes the imprisoned rune being and
Alex as its<br clear="none">
master. Awaiting further instructions..."<br
clear="none">
