Why do you hate our freedoms?
The Kindle is exactly the device Stallman envisioned in ``Right to
Read,'' decades before it went on sale. Look at you, rushing eagerly
to your dark lord's poison teat.
Legislation is the only way out. For example, the green party could
demand, with the rationale of saving trees (which is more popular than
freedom) that any publication with more than <x> circulation must
provide a copyable, storable electronic version in a format approved
by the Library of Congress, which is required to approve only formats
playable by free software, released in a mechanism likewise approved
such as a FUCKING WEB PAGE not an iKindleGPSTrackingTunnel, delayed no
more than <publication-cycle> * 0.6 from the first sale of a print or
DRM version, and at the same total cost. Likewise books must do the
same within 1 month of selling their <x>'th copy. Publishers are free
to sell DRM'ed electronic versions prior to the point where open
release is required, or open versions through unapproved iKindleTunnel
Control channels, but anything a customer pays toward a DRM or
covertly-delivered version must be deducted from the price if that
same customer later buys the open version downloadable from the
fucking web page, and without any ``fees'' for ``delivery'' or
whatever.
We can defend the structure of the law saying each provision carefully
``balances the interests of publishers and the god-given entitlement
of authors to make money'', against our legitimate interest as
citizens to save the souls of poor trees that haven't harmed anyone
and are having their beautiful bodies chopped down and ground into
paper to serve the guilty public's insatiable desire for printed word
and inexcuseably lazy refusal to cooperate by modifying their habits
and expectations to accept the DRM-enshrouded tree-saving tools we
have so far. It's unfortunate that certain people won't recycle
unless we put these unfairly burdensome restrictions on publishers who
are entitled to compensation for the irreplaceable creative work they
do under whatever scheme they devise (because that's capitalism. so
it's Right.), but if such invasive restrictions on publishers'
freedoms are what it takes to save the poor trees then I'm afraid it
might be worth it, just this one time.
THAT is how you create markets and preserve cultural heritage. The
last thing you want to do is say, ``we need a law to create a larger
market for digital books, newspapers, and their players, and preserve
culture for future generations,'' because Americans will scream
socialism and say the government is trying to take control of
newspapers. It also won't work, your sitting in the recliner saying,
``chocolate or vanilla? hm, can't decide. Did you say 20% off on
vanilla? oh goody!''
