Has anyone tried inserting a set of fudge dice into one of these
travel yahtzee rollers?

Nope, but if you figure it out, be sure to let the list know. That
would actually be really cool, especially for "backpack" Fudge games.
I seem to remember playing with one of those one time and it had a
"locking" mechanism to keep you from rerolling all of the dice, which
could be neat, depending on how you were using it. I don't seem to
recall how it was built, though. My suspicion is that it was a piece
of molded plastic and there wouldn't be any way to get into it, but it
would be nice to be wrong.

I think I have one at home. I'll have to dig it up. I'll post my findings.

Yes, I made one. I put in three white Fudge dice, one red, and one
d6 just in case. It works relatively well.

Oh? Excellent! Do you remember what you did to get it open? Was it a
fairly simple task or did it require a Herculean effort of engineering
prowess. I'll admit, I have none of that. :)
Hey... a step-by-step article, maybe with pictures, would be kind of
neat for Fudge Factor. I'm sure a lot of Fudge players would find it
useful.

I think I started a crack with an Xacto knife, then pried enough to
get the old dice out. Squeeze in the new and add a spot of glue to
the opening, and voila! I think. It's been a while.

I'll try the surgery on mine and let you all know. If it's worthy of an
article, I'll submit it. Just in case, I'll take pictures along the way :)

Oh very nice!
I found that image because I was looking for this one:
http://www.boardgamesexpress.com/images/large/yahtzeefolio.jpg
I saw that in a berkeley game store and thought it would make
a nice "GM kit" if you didn't mind folding your sheets in half or
using index cards for everything. My search turned up the cheaper
model, which seemed like an even better travel set.

btw, if you look up "Yahtzee" in the list archives, you'll see this
has come up before multiple times. In 2000, Jon Niehof said this:
> My fiancee suggested just using needlenose pliers and

> works. Just pop the dF in from the top then. It chews up the

Steffan even posted about his experience with it after he did his,
also in 2000 (Steffan was on Jun 30, and Jon was in July, I think
Jon's was in reply to Steffan's, where Steffan had done hard work
to get it to happen, and Jon was saying it can be done easier).
(someone else had posted back in 98 about using them with 5 dF's,
but I think I like the 4dF + 1d6 idea more)
Also, the portfolio yahtzee just posted is on a site that is also
selling travel yahtzee for cheap (it was $7 when Steffan posted
about it, and that site is selling them for $4.76):

Oh, and one other thought:
you could probably also use a dremel tool to convert those d6's to dF's.
By carving out (with one of the dremel heads) a groove to connect dots,
you could:
1) make the 4 and 5 into X's (to indicate plus)
2) make the 2 and 3 into /'s (to indicate minus)
3) make the 6 into a box and then put a dot in the middle
4) put a box around the 1 (so it's also a box with a dot in the middle)
Then fill in the new grooves with black paint.
The "box with a dot" is sort of like a theta or phi, where phi is often
used for "null" or "zero" (esp in computer character sets).
The only downside (to those who might care) is that the opposites aren't
balanced. The +'s wont be opposite eachother, and the /'s wont be opposite
eachother (but the zero's will). This is sort of "un-d6'ish", where the
opposites are supposed to total 7, thus creating a sort of balancing, not
weight balancing but number balancing. Instead, you'll get opposite sides
that total 0 (5 and are opposite, so you'll have + and - there ... same
with 3 and 4). Some may actually prefer that balance to having +'s be on
opposites, and -'s on opposites.
It would require a steady hand and everything, but it could be done.

I rememebr having something similar from another board game. It was a
question game and had a plastic transparent box in which there was a card
divided into fields. These fields were divided by a grate and there was a
"sidebar" with a d6. In the grate, there was a small red bead. You would
shake the box, see where the bead went, take out a question card, answer it
and, if you guessed correctly, move a number of fields equal the d6. The box
also had a deep hole in which you inserted a small (about 30 seconds) sand
hourglass.
I'm thinking, you could swap the sheet with... critical hit locations or
something, depends on the system, put some SMALL (I have six very small d6',
half-a-centimeter each) dice onto the dice compartment and extensively use
the hourglass during combat (you know have 30 seconds to think of a
retaliation).
