Again (and you almost certainly _did_ get this point earlier), it's _not_
about being "sick of hearing from newbies": The Linux community is
famous for helping newcomers.

The issue is willingness to take elementary steps to help one's self,
_first_, before dropping your problem in several hundred advanced users'
mailboxes. Unwillingness to do so means that they don't care if they
needlessly waste your time, and that they'll be back yelling for help
_every_ time they have the tiniest, easiest-to-solve problem.

The Linux community has gone to a great deal of effort to ensure that
answers to common questions are easy to find. My opinion is that
babysitting people unwilling to use _any_ of the very extensive self-help
methods Linuxers have so painstakingly created -- or even spend two minutes
on Infoseek or DejaNews -- is a waste of time.

I'll often work tirelessly to help someone who mentions having taken those
obvious self-help steps. On the other hand, I'm increasingly inclined to
completely ignore people who don't bother -- and to resent them cluttering
my mailbox.

Cheers, The cynics among us might say: "We laugh,
