The story goes that Lars Wirzenius started the "virtual beer"
program to get people to send him checks so he could buy Linus a beer
on behalf of the many users.
Of course, Linus Torvalds isn't much of a beer drinker,
really. And people thwarted Lars's moneymaking plans by sending the
checks to Linus directly.
Lars decided that the surest recipe for causing trouble for a
Finn is to send him an American personal check. The banks there look
at it like it's contagious or something.
At least, that's what he told me when I ran into him a few
years ago at LinuxExpo.
