I learned what it was from a Berton Roueche story, where some hospital
patients were all getting sicker from (what Judge Kaplan would call a
common-source epidemic) what turned out to be some tainted carmine in
their hospital meals.

Anaphylaxis from a popsicle is just _wrong_.  (Like non-vegetarian soy
milk.)
