Don,

    You are right - it's anyone's guess whether Adobe would have backed
down anyway.

    But no matter whether the EFF *caused* Adobe's retreat or was "mostly
irrelevant", there's still no reason why anyone should be beating them up.
We're all on the same side here, even if we disagree on tactics, as Declan
said.
