They are very concerned and dismayed, as I've filled them in on some of the intellectual property law abuses being perpetrated overseas. They were almost in disbelief when I told them about stuff like: * Amazon 1-click patent * Arrest of Dmitry Sklyarov * Microsoft using licensing audits as threat to force companies and organisations to sign expensive software assurance contracts * Illegality of viewing DVDs on Linux systems * Draconian software EULAs * Abuse of DMCA eg Scientologists shutting down anti-scientology websites * Constant extension of copyright terms to protect Mickey Mouse * General menace of software patents * Huge difference between cost of Open Source systems versus proprietary * Looming threat of DRM, and lobbying efforts to force replacement of all TVs, computers, stereos etc with heavily secured digital hardware I've since heard back from them, wanting links so they can carry out their own investigations. I could search the usual places like /., TheRegister etc, and put something together myself. But I'm writing to ask if any of you know of any good link farms, which concentrates onto one page a set of high quality links covering the above, on the general theme of abuse of Intellectual Property Law, its emergence of IP Law as plutocratic implement, and its fall as a regime for protecting the independent creator. I'm sure that between you all, you've already got more excellent bookmarks than I could put together in a month. If any of you know any good links pages and general digital activism pages, can you please send them to me directly - david@rebirthing.co.nz, and/or to the C-FIT list. Trial for ElcomSoft Co. Ltd., set to begin Monday, is now scheduled to start Dec. 2 in federal court in San Jose, California, officials said. The delay is designed to give the U.S. Attorney's office time to work on getting ElcomSoft President Alexander Katalov and employee Dmitry Sklyarov visas to come to the United States, said Judy Trummer, spokeswoman for the defense team. Katalov is named as a defendant, while Sklyarov is expected to be a witness in a trial that will focus on U.S. efforts to force greater copyright protections in the fast-growing world of digital media. A spokesman for Consular Affairs at the U.S. State Department confirmed that U.S. officials denied Katalov and Sklyarov visas under a section of immigration law frequently invoked when officials see a risk that visitors will immigrate to the United States rather than just visit. He declined to comment further, saying visa applications and the decisions on rejecting them are confidential. "We are working with both the State Department and the Department of Justice on this issue," Marina Serebreyanaya, an immigration lawyer who is helping the defense, said in a statement. "Obviously, not having Dmitry and Alex here in the U.S. is a problem for both sides." Assistant U.S. Attorney Ross Nadel said he could not comment on the visa situation beyond confirming that the trial was postponed. I'm no psychiatrist, but here's what I know. I met him when I was a kid and again the other day and I don't think he's much of a politician. Basically, he's a Xerox hacker turned senior citizen. The crowd will be there to adore him, and you probably won't get kudos from them either. BTW, not only am I not a psychiatrist, I'm not an experienced activist, either. So just FYI! -Rich Rich Bodo | rsb@ostel.com | 650-964-4678 On Thu, 31 Oct 2002, Don Marti wrote: > If you start a company that does evil things, you shouldn't expect > your public appearances to be populated exclusively by fanboys. > It would be good to have some people from the Free Dmitry movement > at this. > > http://www.computerhistory.org/events/lectures/adobe_11122002/ > > Adobe Systems - The Founders' Perspective > Charles Geschke and John Warnock > > Tuesday, November 12, 2002 > MEMBERS ONLY and VIP Reception - 6:00 PM > Member seating begins - 6:30 PM > General lecture seating begins - 6:50 PM > Lecture - 7:00 PM > Event ends promptly - 9:00 PM > > LOCATION > Reception: Computer History Museum, Bldg. 126, Moffett Field > Lecture: Moffett Training and Conference Center, Bldg. 3, Moffett Field > > (If you're in San Francisco, this is very easy to get to from > Caltrain and VTA light rail.) > > -- > Don Marti dmarti@linuxjournal.com > Editor in Chief > Linux Journal > http://linuxjournal.com/ > > _______________________________________________ > free-sklyarov mailing list > free-sklyarov@zork.net > http://zork.net/mailman/listinfo/free-sklyarov > From dmarti at zgp.org Thu Oct 31 09:34:40 2002 From: dmarti at zgp.org (Don Marti) Date: Fri Jul 8 22:09:58 2005 Subject: [free-sklyarov] Charles Geschke and John Warnock, Tuesday, November 12 In-Reply-To: References: <20021031163031.GD4115@zgp.org> Message-ID: <20021031173440.GC5879@zgp.org> begin Rich Bodo quotation of Thu, Oct 31, 2002 at 09:14:54AM -0800: > The crowd will be there to adore > him, and you probably won't get kudos from them either. I'm not planning to trash the place, just ask one question. Treating skillful people as apolitical technology priests, to be spared ordinary discourse, is one of the most dehumanizing political moves I can think of. Unfortunately, it's standard in Silicon Valley circles. -- Don Marti http://zgp.org/~dmarti dmarti@zgp.org KG6INA From rsb at ostel.com Thu Oct 31 09:47:25 2002 From: rsb at ostel.com (Rich Bodo) Date: Fri Jul 8 22:09:58 2005 Subject: [free-sklyarov] Charles Geschke and John Warnock, Tuesday, November 12 In-Reply-To: <20021031173440.GC5879@zgp.org> Message-ID: > I'm not planning to trash the place, just ask one question. > Cool. Although that megaphone of yours could get almost anyone to charge the stage. I think I If you do decide to trash the place, let me know. I'll meet you for beers beforehand. ;) I'm curious to see what he says. I'll bet you could get some really good information. -Rich Rich Bodo | rsb@ostel.com | 650-964-4678
