>> The boy thinks for a moment. "There's tunnels underneath the

>> lectricity running through them. I'm not supposed to know about
>> them, but I do. But you'd better hurry. That dim-gate's going to
>> open soon, and that's when they do the breeding. But I'm only

The boy nods. "Follow me," he says, ducking back underneath the bridge.

The river bank under the bridge is a maze of pieces of concrete, steel
and masonry, much of it blackened, as if struck by something with
intense energy. It looks like it was all dumped into the river to
clear the plain surrounding the pyramid. Under the bridge, there is so
much debris that it has formed something of a natural dam, and the
river level on one side is several feet higher than the other, with a
waterfall spilling into the lower river.

Above Ted's head the bridge looms, glowing dimly in the light of the
nexus. They are completely underneath it when the boy points to what
appears to be an ancient sewer pipe. A makeshift ladder, propped up by
a large flat piece of concrete, leads up to the pipe itself.

"In there!" the boy says, as he scrabbles up the ladder and into the
pipe. The pipe itself is quite large, about ten feet in diameter. A
trickle of water flows out of it, making the floor slippery with
slightly glowing algae that seems to pulse in unison with the ley
lines and nexus point. The boy moves quickly, picking different
branches without hesitation. It's hard for Ted to keep track, but he
estimates that they are steadily heading eastward.

Finally, they reach the point at which several sewer pipes merge in a
large concrete room about forty feet from end to end, and about the
same in height. It likely once filled with water, but there is a great
crack in the bottom that the water likely long ago leaked into. There
is the musty smell of decay here that is almost overpowering.

The boy points a small rusty steel observation deck about three
quarters of the way up the far wall of the room. A ladder leads up,
looking even rustier than the deck. A steel door can be seen, and as
Ted's eyes adjust, he can see a lone figure sitting on the deck, a
tube that looks something like a gun in one hand, and the other
holding some sort of burning stick that it takes a few puffs on. It's
hard to see in the light, but the creature, while humanoid, does not
look very human.
