YLEM Forum:
Artists, Freedom and Privacy
Wednesday, May 15, 7:30 PM
McBean Theater, The Exploratorium
3601 Lyon St., San Francisco, CA 94123

Seth David Schoen, staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation
will speak about issues and legislation affecting artists, including
intellectual property and the Hollings bill. Will future machines prevent
faithful duplication of images as well as music and film? What about fair
use and copying ones' own work?
Another concern is privacy vs. marketing and security information-gathering.
Is a certain amount of anonymity necessary for free thought?

"Why Johnny Can't Encrypt: Social Aspects and Barriers to Adoption of
Privacy Technology" is the subject of Matt Hamrick's talk. Use of
privacy-enhancing technology has been compared to the use of seat belts or
condoms: It's there to protect against infrequent crises. Seat belt usage is
nearly universal in the United States, but usage of even the simplest
privacy technology is limited to a small percentage of internet users. The
question is, why? Matt Hamrick spends his day developing security features
for mobile handheld devices. He's worked as a Cryptographer, an Engineering
Manager, a Bail Bondsman, and a Marine. When not prodding cell phones or
PDA's he enjoys a good novel and occasionally writes under several different
pseudonyms.

Free, open to the public, wheelchair accessible.

Future Forum dates: July 17, September 18, November 20.
