A fellow student in my Portuguese class found this news.  Gilberto Gil
has also become famous for having become a huge free software and
Creative Commons advocate.  He is a good friend of John Perry
Barlow's.

Gilberto Gil on Contemporary Brazilian Culture

Gilberto Gil is one of the most important singers and composers in modern 
Brazilian pop music. In the 1960s he helped start the Tropic?lia movement 
that combined Brazil's regional folk culture with international influences 
to create a new style of cinema, literature and music. He has served as 
Minister of Culture under President Luiz In?cio Lula da Silva since 2003.
