Between cities, we tend to break up into a small number of groups. The ideal size for a group is 4-6, but often we are required to ride together with 10-20 people in a single set.

Not everyone rides at the same pace, and groups travel at the speed of the slowest rider. As a result, we tend to break up into at least two types:

󰴻 Tortoises

  • ride slower
  • leave earlier
  • do not dilly-dally
  • get ready promptly

󰤇 Hares

  • ride faster
  • leave later
  • take more diversions
  • may sleep in more

It is important to note this requirement: if you do not ride at racing speeds, you will have less time to relax. Do not set your schedule based on how unconcerned a lycra-clad racing-bike rider is.

Remember the lesson of the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare, however: often the Tortoises will arrive before the Hares, because the faster riders spent all their time eating crisps and talking about groupsets.
