You must book your own channel crossing tickets in advance.

We cannot book this travel for you, as it requires your own 󰟣 Passport and (if necessary) visa arrangements.

Out

For the ride out, we all try to book the same ferry from Dover to Dunkerque:

Book Dover Ferry

  1. Click to turn off the Including Calais option.
  2. Then click the 12-18 button to limit your time range.

Try to select the 2pm ferry, but if you can’t, then the 4pm ticket will work just as well (we can board ferries before and after the ones we’re booked for).

Return

There is no “official” return route.

We can’t be sure that everyone even wants to end up in London after the ride is over, so we officially end things at the photo in Amsterdam. Some ride The Route in reverse, some take coaches, some risk the Eurostar, and many take the rail and ferry route via Harwich.

You will need to make the decision for yourself how you wish to travel after reaching Amsterdam.

We recommend taking the Stena Line ferries’ “Rail&Sail” service.

You can order a ticket that leaves on the evening of the 9th, and permits you and your bike a journey straight through to Liverpool Street by way of Hoek van Holland and Harwich International.

There is a less expensive daytime service, but we recommend the overnight ferry.

Book Rail&Sail Return

The car deck on the Stena Line ferry can accommodate just about anything you can pedal, including this “Cercle” camping bike that transforms into a tent. We crossed paths with this rider a few times in 2023.
Relaxing as the ferry shoves off, in 2025.

Don’t forget to make sure you’re on the Hook of Holland → Harwich journey, and that you select With vehicle so you can enter your bike onto your ticket. At the final ticket selection stage, don’t forget to select the Rail & Sail option to include the train ticket and bike reservation as part of your journey.

Remember to select your bicycle as a vehicle.

The cost in 2026 of one rider with bicycle from Hoek van Holland through to London Liverpool Street on the overnight ferry.

There is a cabin surcharge for the overnight journey, but this cost can be shared with a friend and it saves you the price of a hotel stay in Amsterdam.

Bikes on the train from Harwich back to London Liverpool Street in 2025

You can take your bike on off-peak trains from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, and then on the metro to Hoek van Holland Haven.

The one interchange that often trips people up is the ride off the ferry on the morning of the 10th. If you follow the route above, you will find level access to the railway platforms at a level crossing around behind the station. This is by far the simplest way to get your bike in place for your morning train journey back to London.
